Enchanting

In today’s blog post we give a short description of how enchantments work in Mundus RPG. Enchantments are divided into two main categories, weapon enchantments and apparel enchantments. In addition to these two categories the same principles of enchanting can be applied to other objects as well. For example, enchanting a book with the “Eternity” enchantment can make it nigh impossible to be damaged or destroyed by conventional means.

Weapon enchantments are the main focus of Mundus RPG’s enchanting system. These enchantments are divided into main enchantments and secondary enchantments. As the name suggests, main enchantments provide the main arcane effect for the weapon. Most common effects are weapon speed and damage bonuses. Main enchantments can also imbue the weapon with special powers, such as an ability to duplicate the weapon, shoot fire or other elements and otherwise change the physical abilities of the weapon.

Secondary enchantments can be described as “traits” of weapons’. They add either positive or negative effects to the enchantment. Positive effects make the enchanting process harder and negative effects make the process easier. Positive effects include such effects as causing a bleeding check after each successful hit and increasing the character’s maximum jumping distance. Negative effects can drive the wielder to bloodlust and imbue a demon into the weapon.

Apparel enchantments are applied to clothing, armor and other wearable objects. These enchantments give the character much smaller benefits compared to weapon enchantments as our design philosophy is to keep characters from becoming more powerful by just hoarding magic items.

Example of an enchanted weapon:

Exceptional Quality Katana
Damage: 3/4/0 ; 4/4/0 (1-handed ; 2-handed)
Speed: 4 / 5 (1-handed / 2-handed)
Weight: 1,5 kg
Cost: 64 Silver
Effects: Bleeding 6
Tranquility (Main)
The weapon ignores 2 fatigue and 2 injury points from the wielder of the weapon.
Regeneration (Secondary)
If the weapon is destroyed it starts to slowly regenerate. This regeneration process takes one day to fully reconstruct the weapon. A completely melted weapon or a weapon ground to dust cannot regenerate.
Jagged (Secondary)
Each successful hit with the enchanted weapon causes a Bleeding check to the target.

Dragons

Serus, Lord of Bane
Mundus RPG has two types of dragons. The first type is the wurm dragon, which is the european style dragon, and the second type is the serpent dragon, which is the Asian style dragon. Both dragon types have similar behavior and their main difference is their appearance. Also, wurm dragons tend to be noticeably stronger whereas serpent dragons are more agile and they possess a mythical ability to fly without having wings.

In Mundus RPG dragons are a sentient race and they should not be confused with a traditional RPG monster just guarding a treasure in her cave. Just like few other sentient “animal” races, dragons are able to take a humanoid form after they reach maturity (or if they are born in their human form). When a dragon takes her humanoid form for the first time, the humanoid form usually takes a heavy influence from the people the dragon has seen. For example, if the dragon has lived in Tentaika she is very likely to look like a Tentaikan in her human form.

Dragons rarely have their own communities and instead they tend to blend in to human/cero/sedeum communities.  As dragons are usually intelligent, very powerful and nigh immortal they tend to rise to important positions if they wish to. In fact, there are many dragons as lords and ladies. Few of the more notable ones are Serus, Lord of Bane; Kiyohime, Lady of Revenge; Bakunawa, Lady of Eclipse and Murleus, Lord of Chasms.

Each dragon also has an element which she can change her genki into. Dragons also receive a bonus into their ritualism skill with rituals of their element. Their scale color also reflects their element. These elements include fire, ice, lightning, shadow etc. You can find more about dragons, their character creation modules and their elements in the upcoming Mundus RPG core rule book.

Next week we’ll have a blog post about enchanting. Feel free to send additional topic requests and questions to our Facebook page, email or to here.

DigiExpo & Progress

Our lead designer Ville attended DigiExpo last weekend. DigiExpo is not the ideal place to promote a tabletop role-playing game but nevertheless it was a fun experience and surprisingly many people were interested about Mundus RPG.

"Kajak Games booth with some of our fellows"

The project itself is nearing the end of production and only few things remain to be added to the book. Proofreading and layout design are also progressing nicely and the artwork is pretty much done. We are hoping to get everything done by the end of this month.

Blog Post About Demons and Rituals

We received a request from players to share some rituals and creatures so here is a small sneak peak to rule book. The creature we are sharing with you this week is the Akaoni. It is a common Tentaikan demon and actually a quite strong one. If you try to take down an Akaoni with the example characters in the Quick Start you’d better be well prepared as they have taken down unwary demon hunters before.

We also share four rituals with you. We have three offensive rituals from Inmicus, God of War and a single support ritual from Terra, Goddess of Earth. As these rituals are quite basic it is rather easy to convert them for other deities if you wish. For example, to create a version of Hell Arrow for Lumia, Goddess of Moon, just convert it to deal Energy damage instead of Fire damage, make it look shadowy and call it something like Shadow Arrow.

As we mentioned last week Ville, our lead designer, is going to attend DigiExpo next weekend. If you are in Helsinki area, stop by the booth and have a talk. Ville is sharing the booth with Kajak Games so if you don’t see Ville around just ask the Kajak guys to give him a call and he’ll gladly come to have a chat (unless he is in the line for PS4 :P).

If you have any lore or gameplay questions feel free to ask them here in our blog or in our facebook page. We’ll try to answer them the best we can.

Akaoni

Akaonis are an ogrish demon race and they often have a red or reddish brown skin and they are roughly three to four meters tall. Scholars believe that akaonis are somehow linked to Rengoku, one of the eight hells. They lead a nomadic lifestyle and they move across the lands in small tribes. Akaonis are most common in eastern Tentaika and they prefer open plains and light forests. They often steal cattle from villages or threaten villagers to give them food. Sometimes the akaonis might kill or enslave humans, on the other hand akaoni tribes living in harmony with secluded villages which keep the onis happy with occasional sacrifices are not unheard of.

Rituals

Inmicus- God of War

Corpse Explosion               2XP
Level Requirement: 3
Cast Time: 3 seconds
Range: 20 Meters, AoE 5 Meters
Element: Fire
This ritual requires a corpse of a dead animal or other being as a target. The ritual detonates the corpse and creates a gory explosion that deals CHA x2 (m20) Piercing damage in 2 point clusters up to a 5 meter radius. Add the detonated corpse’s size modifier to the damage and blast radius.

The Corpse Explosion ritual defiles the dead and is a condemnable action, especially if the defiled person was an important figure. Casting the Corpse Explosion often leads to severe punishment in Tentaika.

Rigo’s Gaze                        1XP
Level Requirement: 4
Cast Time: 3 seconds
Range: 50 Meters
Element: Chaos
The caster releases a transparent jagged energy blade towards a single target. The caster gains an additional +1 to the ritualism attack roll. The ritual deals CHA (m10) Energy damage to the target and it can cause a bleeding effect.

Hell Arrow                          2XP
Level Requirement: 4
Cast Time: 2 seconds
Range: 50 Meters
Element: Fire
The caster hurls off a flaming bolt. This ritual deals CHA (m10) Fire damage to the target. The Hell Arrow can be used as an arrow or a bolt with Archery weapons.

Terra – Goddess of Earth

Stone Skin                          3XP
Level Requirement: 4
Cast Time: 4 seconds
Range: Self
Element: Earth
This ritual hardens the ritualist’s skin. The ritualist gains 2/2/2 armor rating. This does stack with Perks, Traits or other abilities which grant natural armor. However the Stone Skin ritual does not stack with other rituals or channeling effects. The Stone Skin armor rating grants only halved rating to locations where the character wears armor. This ritual lasts CHA minutes.

Crunch Part III

The crunch continues and most of the rules are now written down and finished. Currently we are hunting down little missing things and doing last minute fixing. As always with large projects, we would like to start everything from the beginning, however we are very satisfied with the current condition of the game.

As a short notice we are planning to attend this year’s DigiExpo in Helsinki. Please visit our booth if you are in the area!

Crunch Part II

Hello!

We have continued crunching and the rule book is coming along nicely. Unfortunately because of the tight schedule we have not had time to prepare a proper blog post for this week. Instead here is a small status update. During this week we have written demon and creature descriptions. Also roughly half of the GM chapter is done and the descriptions of Tentaika’s prefectures and most important samurai clans have been updated for the book.

NGS Week and Crunch

Hello!

This week has been a busy one. We are in crunch mode to get the game finished in time and currently we have only the Game Master and Lore chapters left to write. We also attended the Northern Game Summit this week, where our lead designer Ville pitched the Mundus RPG in a pitching competition. Unfortunately we didn’t win the contest but all in all we enjoyed the two days of NGS.

A New Quickstart Character

Download the New Quickstart Character Here

We have something different for you this week. We created an additional character for the quickstart campaign. The character, Murakami Katashi, plays a bit differently compared to the other characters. He wears armor and has a perk called Pain Resistance. At level 3 the Pain Resistance perk negates the stun status effect and gives a +3 bonus to Consciousness checks. Murakami also has the Distraction perk which allows him to throw a single small throwing weapon from a holster per turn using his Mixed skill score. This takes no time but uses a single stamina point.

Murakami’s armor and the Pain Resistance perk are especially useful when combined with his Counter Attack Combat Move. Counter Attack allows a character to attack instead defending. What this means is that if someone attacks against Murakami in melee, he may choose to ignore defending and instead attack the attacker. If he does so, no opposite combat checks are rolled. Instead both the original attacker and Murakami roll an attack roll TN7. If they succeed they hit their target. Using an aimed attack with or against a Counter Attack is not possible. The original attacker may also decide to roll a defense roll against the Counter Attack instead of finishing his attack.

Murakami Katashi is a loyal member of the Murakami Clan. He strictly follows the old traditional bushido and this shows in his behavior as he is very polite and somewhat rigid. Despite of his considerable skills Katashi is seen as an average samurai. This is mostly because of Katashi’s modesty and the fact that he is not part of the respected naval forces.

You can download Murakami Katashi’s character sheet here.

Example Rituals

This week we share two examples of a high level ritual. These rituals are far more powerful than those found in the Mundus RPG Quickstart. The scaling damage on Black Aurora and the duration of Avatar of Bravery are the norm in Combat Rituals in Mundus RPG. In the Quickstart these values are pre-calculated to match each character’s abilities.

The Avatar of Bravery is a support ritual of Inmicus, god of war and the Black Aurora is a more straightforward ritual from Lumia, Goddess of Moon. The elements are more meaningful for high level ritualist as they are able to specialize to rituals of elements of their choosing.

Avatar of Bravery
Level Requirement: 11
Cast Time: 5 seconds
Range: Self
Element: Manipulation
The caster summons a heroic avatar of herself which is blessed by the god of war. This avatar is a Clone of the caster and the avatar’s Strength and Health is increased by Charisma (maximum of 10) points. This shining avatar cannot use ritualism and it attacks with full power against the strongest foe she can think of. The avatar cannot defend against attacks. Roll all attacks against the avatar to medium hit locations regardless of aimed attacks. The avatar has unlimited Stamina pool but it cannot over-channel. The avatar lasts Charisma Bonus minutes (minimum of one minute).

Black Aurora
Level Requirement: 9
Cast Time: 4 seconds
Range: 50 Meters
Element: Shadow
The caster summons a stygian aurora. The Black Aurora discharges through the landscape and slices open the earth. The ritual deals Ritualism x2 + Concentration x2 (maximum of 40) Energy damage. Black Aurora deals its damage in a straight line from its caster up to its maximum range.

These are two examples of Mundus RPG’s over 150 Combat Rituals.

The Void

Yesterday, during our development campaign session, we had this spontaneous one hour long talk about the Void. And that’s what we are going to talk about today.

So, the Void. Where to start with it? Basically the Void is a great nothingness and all the planes exist in it. And when I say they exist in the Void I don’t mean they physically exist in the void. If you take a stroll in the Void you can’t just bump into a plane floating there. The non-physical existence of every plane is in the void and they overlap with each other. All the three main planes (Ascendes, Mundus and Acernos) overlap almost perfectly and other smaller planes might overlap only partially with the three main planes. The almost perfect overlapping of different sized planes is possible because the Void warps time and space.

Okay, here is what the Void does in the gameplay of Mundus RPG. Firstly, and most importantly, it is possible to travel between the planes using the Void.  If you just open a void rift and jump into the void trying to get where you want, is possible but hazardous. Doing it uses extensive amounts of Genki and arriving to where you want is almost impossible to anyone besides Kage Oni demons. If you want to get effectively from one place to the other it is best to use a bonfire. Bonfires are basically anchor points linking two planes to each other. Using a bonfire is relatively easy and safe for those who know what they are doing. Secondly the Void can be used in high level rituals. What these kinds of rituals usually do is that they open miniature void rifts inside people. And void rifts are rather effective at rending matter.

Shinrinki Ranger Corps

Two weeks ago we discussed about demon hunter organizations in Tentaika. In today’s blog post we talk more about the Shinrinki’s Ranger Corps.

The Ranger Corps was originally founded to reinforce the defense of the northern border of Hohiro Prefecture and to patrol Kuro no Mori. From the beginning the Ranger Corps accepted recruits outside the samurai caste. The bulk of the new recruits every year are skilled hunters from the peasant caste and poor rōnins. In Hohiro prefecture the samurai magistrate might give a choice to a criminal to join the Ranger Corps instead of suffering the normal consequences of the crime. However this choice is not given to those who committed serious crimes such as murder.

Anyone wishing to join to Ranger Corps is required to have sufficient skills in archery or in any other way of fighting. The training in Ranger Corps is very similar to actual samurai combat training. However this training is packed into two years of basic training. The recruits are trained in the most essential skills and nothing more. In case of the Ranger Corps this usually comprises of combat and survival training. Bushido is briefly introduced to new recruits and the virtues of courage, honesty and loyalty are emphasized during the training. Despite this bushido is almost non-existent within the Ranger Corps.

An average patrol to Kuro no Mori lasts from three days to a week. Each patrol consists of eight to twelve rangers and their job is to lay traps, ambush demons and scout for large demon hordes near the border. Ranger patrol usually encounters demons, often akuma or gaki, every other trip to Kuro no Mori. Each patrol goes Kuro no Mori once or twice a month. Anyone who survives two years in service is allowed to serve the Shinrinki Clan as a full-fledged samurai.

Samurais from other prefectures are often unaware of the extent of the dangers rangers encounter in their daily life. The fact that Ranger Corps are filled with peasants and other members of low ranking castes increases the disdain. Even the samurais who gained their samurai position in the Ranger Corps are often looked down to because of their low birth.

Demon Hunters

Demon Hunters

Anyone can call herself a demon hunter, but it is usually quite simple to distinguish real demon hunters from those that only call themselves one. Experienced demon hunters are well respected because simply surviving as one requires considerable skill. In addition to private demon hunting groups, Tentaika also has two large organizations that specialize in demon hunting. These organizations are Shinrinki Ranger Corps and Warrior Priestesses.

Shinrinki Ranger Corps is a military organization under Shinrinki Clan. Their main job is to patrol Kuro no Mori and its border regions and thus prevent demons from entering Tentaika from the north. Ranger Corps enlists large amounts of rōnins and skilled peasants. Anyone who survives two years of service in the Ranger Corps is allowed to serve Shinrinki Clan as a samurai, this applies even to peasants. Unfortunately the mortality rate during these two years is over fifty percent.

Warrior Priestesses are priestesses and priests who specialize in demon hunting. Even though Warrior Priestesses are still technically speaking priests and priestesses they are also taken into the samurai caste after their graduation. Unlike people in Shinrinki Ranger Corps, Warrior Priestesses are not a part of a military organization and they do not serve under any clan. Exceptions to this are the Warrior Priestesses who serve in the city of Genkaisha as they are a part of Genkaisha’s military.

Ropecon 2013

Back from the Ropecon 2013

Hello everyone! Last weekend we were at Ropecon 2013 and we hosted four games during the weekend. Almost all of our games were full and all in all players seemed to like the game. We would like to thank all the players for trying out Mundus RPG!

At Ropecon we game mastered the campaign from our Quickstart. Each of the four parties took a very different approach to the problem at hand. If you are planning to play the Quickstart campaign and you don’t want to spoil yourself, stop reading now (See you next Sunday!).

The basic plot of the campaign is that the players are demon hunters who are tasked to find and kill a Gaki demon on the island of Akusekijima. The campaign guides the player characters to search for a rōnin who presumably works for the gaki. The players are informed that the rōnin has probably used one of the two tea houses in the town. From either of the two tea houses the player characters find information about the rōnins whereabouts and with the “help” of the rōnin they can find the gaki. For more detailed description of the campaign check out the Quickstart’s Game Master chapter.

In one of our games the plot didn’t follow the script at all. The player characters ignored the tips about the tea houses and the rōnin and focused in finding the demon. They followed the rumors about the demon’s attacks against samurai and travelers across the island. One of the characters was a samurai from the local Murakami clan and he used his influence to arrange a small weapons shipment which the player characters then used to lure out the demon.

The trap was a success and the characters managed to capture the rōnin leader Noboru. The players managed to make a deal with him and he revealed the gaki’s hideout. Once the player characters reached the temple of water god Agura they shouted a challenge to the gaki. One of the player characters challenged the gaki into a duel, but he soon discovered that he was no match against he gaki. His not-so-honorable demon hunter friends rushed to help him and defeated the demon after many rounds of combat.

Nanaken

Nanaken

This week we’ll shortly introduce the special group of people working directly under the Shogun. This group is called Nanaken and it consists of seven people hand-picked by the Shogun himself. All members of Nanaken are extremely skilled warriors and they are deemed living legends. Nanaken members are usually given jobs that fit their expertise. Even though they are all extremely skilled warriors their specialization may be assassinations, politics or anything between.

Originally Nanaken was formed to battle rogue demigods but since then it has transformed into a Shogun’s personal elite fighting force. Nanaken members are usually dispatched to handle rebelling clans or other internal disputes. Because of this Nanaken members are required to be highly loyal to the Shogun in addition to their top notch fighting skills.

2nd Anniversary of Mundus RPG

2nd Anniversary

Last Wednesday was the 2nd anniversary of Mundus RPG. So we decided to look back to when we started the project.
Happy mob of Gorai celebrating the anniversary.

Two years ago I was having a shower and got an idea about an Asian themed roleplaying-game. So I pitched the idea to my three flatmates. On that same evening we had a raw concept of a post-apocalyptic Asian themed roleplaying-game with zombies and kung-fu fighting.  During the first week of development we iterated the core gameplay concepts of the game and had our first gameplay sessions where we tested the rule set. Few weeks in to the development, the idea of post-apocalyptic theme, and zombies, started to wither away.
First Draft of the Map of Mundus. First development day

In early development our goal was to create fun and deep gameplay system for our own roleplaying needs. None of our four man development team saw this as commercial product. During the next nine months our development team shrunk to two members and somewhere around the nine month mark we were told that we should consider commercializing the game.

Now, after two years of development of Mundus Roleplaying-Game, we are set to release the game in digital format this fall!

Character Archetypes

Character Archetypes

Mundus RPG’s melee archetypes are based on our four combat styles. These four combat styles are Agile, Mixed, Raw Power and Technique. Combat styles define how a character fights where as our weapon skills define weapons they use.

Agile fighters are very defensive and they gain bonuses to avoiding projectiles. They usually favor light and fast weapons. Most dual wielders also choose Agile as their combat style because of a good synergy between these two skills.  Mixed fighters are jacks-of-all-trades as the style borrows some of its abilities from the other three combat styles. As such mixed is very customizable but this also makes it a very difficult combat style for new players to use. As one might guess from Raw Power’s name, its focus is on all out offense and maximum damage. When choosing a weapon for a Raw Power character bigger is usually better. However we have seen successful Raw Power builds that used daggers… The Technique combat style is the combat style that defines samurai. Technique is a melee oriented style that can be customized to focus on either offense or defense. Technique users usually choose medium sized one handed weapons or light two handed ones. From these four styles Raw Power and Technique are the easiest for new players to use.

Where melee fighters can’t forget their ranged defense, ranged fighters can’t forget their melee skills. Because of this even ranged fighters should have a combat style and some kind of melee fighting skill. In addition to our four melee archetypes we have three ranged archetypes. These three archetypes are Archers, Ritualists and Throwers.

Archers are the furthest reaching ranged fighters in Mundus RPG. They are also the most common ranged fighters on Mundus. The negative thing about Archers is that out of all three ranged archetypes they are usually the most vulnerable one in melee combat. They also tend to be the most lethal ranged fighters if they play their cards right. Ritualists, our game’s spell casters, are the most versatile ranged fighters as they are able to work in supportive roles as well as in attacking roles. In addition ritualists have access to the most destructive attacks in the game. Throwers specialize in either throwing few large weapons per combat round, for example throwing spears, or in spamming massive amounts of small daggers or shurikens. As one might guess throwers have the shortest range of all three ranged archetypes. Of course you can mix these archetypes as you wish. For example Ritualist Archers are very effective and Throwing is a good support skill for melee fighters.

Character Creation

Character Creation

In Mundus RPG we use a module system to guide the player through character creation. Modules present three stages of character’s life from birth to adulthood. After the three stages character is 16 years old and in our world he is an adult. After these modules player can choose to take extra modules or use his remaining experience points as he wishes.

The first module stage describes characters birth and early childhood. The second stage defines late childhood years and training he has received from his family. The third stage describes character’s training to his selected profession or lifestyle.

Each module includes experience pool for Attributes, Skills and Traits. Player can spend this XP within the restrictions of the module. For example, Samurai Family module gives player 10XP to spend to attributes and 18XP to skills. This character creation system gives the player a quick backstory for his character or speeds up the creation of a predefined character.

Update

Update

This blog post is a short update about the current status of Mundus RPG. To start off few announcements; Ville, our designer, finally managed to graduate and at least for the next six months he will be working full time on Mundus RPG.  This means we are moving to the actual production phase of Mundus and hopefully sometime in the future we also get this game released. However, at this point it is still too early to speak more about the release.

Right now our core rules are more or less final and we are only adding secondary stuff, such as traits, perks and spells. From now on most of Ville’s work time will be spent writing our rule book. We are hoping to get a very bare bones version of our rule book to our friends so that they can GM their own campaigns. Also our future blog posts will shed some light on our core rules and gameplay mechanics.

Here is an extra picture for you guys. This little fellow enjoying his cucumber is a kappa. In Mundus RPG kappa is a very common Tentaikan water demon and in the real world kappa is one of the most well known creatures in Japanese mythology.
